Johnny Nicholas owner of the Hill Top Cafe in Fredericksburg and former band member of
Asleep at the Wheel will be joined by Austin and San Antonio artist for a benefit concert
at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds on Saturday November 9 for an evening of Texas Swing,
Jazz, Blues and Tejano music.
Headlineing this years performance of the Texas All-Star Big Band Bash Vol. 5 will be
Marcia Ball, Joe King Carrasco, Johnny Bush, and Johnny Nicholas. Featured artist include
Joel Guzman, Stephen Bruton, Floyd Domino, & Cindy Cashdollar. Making up the
All-Star Big Band will be Ernie Durawa , Bill Campbell, Danny Levin, Al Gomez, Randy
Zimmerman, Kaz Kassanoff, Keith Winking and Rocky Morales.

Tickets are now on sale in Fredericksburg at Hilltop Cafe, Arts Coalition Visitor Center,
Martin's Exxon, Western Beverage, & Headquarters Hats in Kerrville at Wolf Mueller's
Books or Antone's Record Store in Austin. Tickets will also be available at the
door. For those wanting to mingle with the performers and be treated to a wine and
cheese mixer with gourmet meal you can purchase a patron ticket for $65 which also
provides reserved seating during the concert. General admission is $20.
Proceeds from this years show will fund workshops for students of the band and theater
programs at Fredericksburg ISD and aslo music mentoring and performing arts programs to be
admistered through FISD Community Education. These funds will be used for a variety
of performing arts projects. Songwriting classes, tutoring in music, summer camps
for percussion, woodwinds, horns; theater camps and more offered through Community
Education will be given a funding boost. Tutoring in music is planned for high
school students down to elementary-aged children.
This years event will be more geared to adults than previous events, with the concert and
dancing from 8-11 p.m.

Since it's inception the BBB has been about the
love of music and sharing it with people in the hill country. This years BBB will mark the
realization of the "rest of dream" for Johnny Nicholas - establishing a
permanent way to pass on the love and knowledge of music to our yout
h.
Funds raised this
year will be used to establish the Fredericksburg Youth Fine Arts Foundation.
Starting in the summer of 2003, a variety of camps will be offered to students 5-18
years of age. Camps will include sections for percussion players, woodwinds and horns.,
also,
guitar clinics, songwriting
classes, tutoring in music and theatre and accordian workshops featuring Tejano, cajun and
German/Czech stylists. Professional musicians, songwriters, singers and actors/directors
will assist with the sessions.
Students
will pay a minimal fee for the various camps, but most of the funding will come from the
endowment made possible by the Big Band Bash. Section help and tutoring for FISD band
students will also be available throughout the year. Also, an anonymous donor has agreed
to match funds that are raised at this years event. The youth music mentoring and
performing arts programs will be administered through FISD Community Education.
